The Culture of Technology

I cannot express my excitement from reading all of your comments. Although, I am always looking for road blocks to reflect upon and overcome. I cannot help but think of something I recently read on a blog. It has a lot to do with our culture and the way in which ideas such as technology are accepted, adopted, and utilized. The automobile is a technology that is readily made available to our young people these days. With this technology comes a tremendous amount of responsibility. This responsibility has taken the shape of drivers education courses, along with the initial skills of driving being taught by generations of drivers who have, in most cases, mastered the skill of handling a ton of metal on the highways, traveling 65 m.p.h.. Today, we hand the keys of our family auto to our children, worried that they will make the right choices, as part of the life-long skills that will allow them to effectively function within this world.

As time passes, let us hope that the new technologies will be accepted as much as the automobile. Maybe our first step toward accepting the benefits of such technologies is to develop an cultural movement that educates both students and parents to the benefits and dangers of these technologies.

I was intrigued by your analogy between automobiles and technology. It is true, though, that with the internet and new technology comes new responsibilities. Knowledge can be transferred and shared, but it can also be perilous. A lot of people do not think of the dangers associated with the new tasks presented to us by you but you are aware of the situation and willing to prevent any wrong-doings :) SMART!!!

I believe that you have brought up a very imporant fact that most of us students can relate to. Most of us love cars and can relate to the car market. Technology and Cars is a perfect comparison.

Mr. Aroune,
Your analogy about the automobile is correct. I feel that we should be aware of the technology even though their are benefits because their could also be many dangers involved. This blog is great, keep up the great work.

In the world of today, society must learn to adapt to change. There exists the opportunity to access any filth in cyberspace that one would like, or wouldn't like. The truth is, whether we like it or not, that the world is constantly progressing. We're not going further back into the past. If one desires to succeed in this world of change, then they need not fear it. Embrace change, become comfortable with it. Only when one does this, will he be seen as a competent individual in this world.

This is Mrs. Zimmerman responding to the auto/technology comparison. I believe that technology is advancement of our species, like the auto was for travel, technology is for our future in all aspects including the transfer of information. The ability to link to specialists from all over the planet gives students today an edge in their education. But, like a car students should be required to receive adequate training on the positive use versus the consequences of misusing the technology. Before you "get behind the wheel" students should be educated on proper use and the dangerous consequences of abuse. It also depends on the maturity and intelligence of the student using the technology (or auto). Remember that mishandling a one-ton vehicle going 65 mph can get you killed. And while technology may not be as bad, it can have its drawbacks but if we are to move forward as a species we will have to adapt and overcome the challenges that are faced through our use of technology. I like the comparison, it feels like we're on the edge of something big - albeit scary - we view it as an adventure and adapt.

I think that this is a neat topic with the fact that the basic car is a peice of technology that many teenagers have interest in, but cars can be dangerous and end a life with the turn of the wheel. learning how to drive safely and responsible, threw the coarce of drivers ed. can help teenagers learn the dangers of driving and adapt to it safely.

"Today, we hand the keys of our family auto to our children, worried that they will make the right choices, as part of the life-long skills that will allow them to effectively function within this world".
I found this comment interesting, and wondered how relevant it was to the use of the internet. We are concerned when our children leave the house in family car...will they remember all the drills and lesson; will they be on the look out for potential hazards. It is the same with technology, and I believe just as important for parents to stay involved in where our children are "traveling", and to lay some very strict ground rules. Technology is a wonderful tool - a great place for individual learning and growth and a necessity for the future. But, like driving without a map, you can get lost and in trouble easily. So with the fun of technology, in my opinion, comes a huge resposibilty on the students behalf as well as with parents and educators. My thought is to proceed with caution, learn responsibility and enjoy the education at the tip of your fingertips.
